What Is Open-Cut Trenching?

The tradeoff is surface disruption. Every foot of trench means disturbed soil, pavement cuts, or torn-up landscaping that needs to be restored. In developed areas, that restoration cost can rival or exceed the excavation cost itself.

 

What Is Directional Drilling?


Directional drilling — also called horizontal directional drilling or HDD — installs utilities underground without disturbing the surface above. A drill enters the ground at an angle, follows a guided bore path, and exits at the target location. The utility line is then pulled back through the bore hole.

 

No open trench. No pavement cuts. Minimal surface disruption.

 

Directional drilling is the right call when:

 

  • You need to cross a road, highway, or driveway without cutting pavement

  • The utility run goes under existing structures, sidewalks, or landscaping

  • You're working in a developed neighborhood or commercial zone where disruption needs to be minimized

  • Environmental or regulatory constraints prevent open excavation

  • Restoration costs for trenching would be significant

  • The project involves a road crossing on a busy corridor

 

In Southern Utah, directional drilling is used regularly for road crossings on Highway 15, Highway 9, and local arterials in St. George and Cedar City. It's also common in Washington County's developed residential areas where open trenching would require significant pavement and landscaping restoration.

The region's rocky desert soil — including caliche, hardpan, and red rock layers — can slow down both trenching and drilling. Here's how terrain affects each:
